Tianjin (China): The importance of maintaining peace and stability along the border was emphasized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday, as stated by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
The leaders engaged in extensive talks aimed at mending the bilateral relationship, which has faced significant challenges due to the prolonged border standoff in eastern Ladakh that concluded in October of the previous year.
Misri elaborated on the discussions held on the sidelines of the SCO summit, noting that Modi raised concerns regarding cross-border terrorism and advocated for mutual support in combating this issue, which affects both nations.
He mentioned that China has shown understanding and cooperation regarding India's efforts to tackle cross-border terrorism during the ongoing SCO summit.
The foreign secretary highlighted that Modi and Xi discussed their guiding principles for bilateral relations, which are anticipated to shape future interactions.
There was a shared belief that a stable and friendly relationship between India and China could benefit the 2.8 billion citizens of both countries.
President Xi proposed four key recommendations to enhance bilateral ties, according to Misri.
These recommendations included: enhancing strategic communication and building mutual trust, expanding cooperation for mutual benefits, addressing each other's concerns, and fostering multilateral collaboration to protect shared interests.
Prime Minister Modi responded positively to all these suggestions, Misri noted.
He also stressed the necessity of maintaining peace and tranquility in border regions to ensure the smooth progression of bilateral relations.
The foreign secretary concluded that both leaders agreed that differences should not escalate into disputes.
